Ramping Up LFP Battery Production in the US

LGES’s second Michigan plant has begun production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells using advanced coating, stacking, and formation processes. The $2B Lansing facility, which will employ 1,700 workers at full capacity producing 35 GWh per year, manufactures LFP cells for utility-scale, grid-scale, and commercial and industrial energy storage (ESS) applications. The Lansing facility is part of LG Energy Solution’s aggressive North American expansion. The company plans more than 50 GWh of total LFP cell-making capacity across five North American plants by the end of 2026. By year’s end, 80 percent of the company’s global ESS capacity will be located in North America, underscoring the region’s strategic importance to the company’s growth plans and commitment to localized production. However, 100% of the critical raw material feedstock for the LFP cell manufacturing lines is imported as there are no LFP battery cathode active material (CAM) plants in the United States.
