The sharp increase in sulfur prices have hit phosphate producers especially hard. Sulfur costs reached $540-550/t cfr Brazil in December and the latest weekly assessment puts sulfur at $720-730/t cfr Brazil. The Mosaic Company has now idled or closed a number of phosphate sites in Brazil as a direct result of high sulfur prices. Decoupling phosphate production from sulfur supply has never been more important, with producers turning to Travertine’s electrochemical sulfuric acid process and lower cost phosphate production process to get back on track. Travertine’s sulfuric acid production cost is equivalent to sulfur burning when sulfur is at $110/t.
